In Warrior States (3 B.C.) and Qin Period, Ganjingzi region was under the jurisdiction of Liaodong Prefecture. In Western Han Dynasty, it was under the jurisdiction of Tashi County of Liaodong Prefecture. In the Three Kingdoms Period, Wei renamed Tashi County as Dongta County. The region was under the jurisdiction of Beifeng County of Liaodong Prefecture in the Western Jin Dynasty and Liaodong Prefecture of Ping State during the Qian Yan, Qian Qin and Hou Yan Periods in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. After 668 A.D., the region was under the jurisdiction of Andong Prefecture in Jili state, and in Liao Dynasty, it was under the jurisdiction of Laisu County of Su State. In Jin Dynasty, the region was under the jurisdiction of Fu State Huacheng County in Liaoyang Prefecture. The Huacheng County was upgraded to Jinzhou in 1216. In Yuan Dynasty, the region was under the jurisdiction of Wanhu Prefecture in Jinfu State. The region was under the jurisdiction of Jinzhou Guard Station in Ming Dynasty and Ninghai County, Jinzhou State Lvan County in sequence in Qing Dynasty.
 
After the Sino-Japanese War, Qing government was forced to sign contracts in 1898, making Lvshun and Dalian as Russian colony. Guandong Province was under the jurisdiction of Russia. Areas including Xiaoping Island, Chagou and Yingchengzi were under jurisdiction of Lvshun administration, and areas including Gezhenpu, Xinzhaizi, Liushutun and Choushuizi were under jurisdiction of Jinzhou administration.
 
After Japanese-Russian War, Japan took Russia’s place in 1905, occupying Lvshun and Dalian and renaming Guandong Province as Guandong State. Ganjingzi region was under the jurisdiction of three civil administration offices of Guandong State including Dalian, Lvshun and Jinzhou. Haimao sub-district and Zhoushuizi sub-district were under the jurisdiction of Dalian municipal government in 1937. Sub-districts including Xiaoping Island, Luanjiatun, Chagou, Gezhenpu and part of Zhoushuizi were under the jurisdiction of Lvshun civil administration office, and sub-districts including Nanguanling, Dalian Bay and part of Haimao were under the jurisdiction of Jinzhou civil administration office. Sub-districts of the former Lvshun civil administration office including Yingchengzi, Xiaoping Island, Luanjiatun, Chagou and Gezhenpuand sub-districts of the Jinzhou civil administration office including Nanguanling and Dalian Bay were under the jurisdiction of Dalian municipal government in 1944.
 
Dalian municipal government was founded on November 8, 1945 after the city’s liberation on August 22 the same year. Dalian county government was founded in December, 1945, the first county-level regime of its kind in China. Totally eight sub-districts including Ganjingzi, Nanguanling, Gezhenpu, Western Mountain, Yingchengzi, Chagou, Big Mountain and Xiaoping Island were under the jurisdiction of Dalian county. Dalian county had seven sub-districts in May of 1946, merging the Big Mountain into Xiaoping Island sub-district. On December 18 of 1949, they were renamed as sub-district people’s governments.
 
Dalian county was repealed in December of 1950. Its Western Mountain sub-district merged into Shahekou district, and other regions were divided into Ganjingzi, Yingchengzi and Xiaoping Island sub-districts, which were under the jurisdiction of People’s Government of Lvda Municipality.
 
The sub-district people’s governments were renamed as the sub-district people’s committee in April of 1955.
 
The Xiaoping Island sub-district merged with Yingchengzi in August of 1956, naming the whole as Big Xinzhaizi sub-district, which was under the jurisdiction of People’s Committee of Lvda Municipality.
 
The Big Xinzhaizi sub-district was repealed in August of 1959, and its region was under the jurisdiction of Shahekou district, Ganjingzi district and Lvshun county-level city respectively.
 
The People’s Committee of Ganjingzi District was renamed as People’s Commune of Ganjingzi District in April of 1960.
 
The name of the People’s Committee of Ganjingzi District was resumed in June of 1961.
 
The People’s Committee of Ganjingzi District was renamed as the Revolution Committee of Ganjingzi District in May of 1968.
 
The name of the People’s Government of Ganjingzi District was resumed in August of 1980.
 
The Dalian Bay in Jin County was under the jurisdiction of Ganjingzi district in January of 1984.
 

Lingshui sub-district was governed by Dalian Hi-Tech Industrial Zone in September of 2008.
